Conventional wisdom has it that Jewish Marranos from Spain found in North Africa a haven from persecution by the Spanish Inquisition. But there were periods in Morocco when Jews were forced to convert to Islam. In what promises to be a fascinating talk, Paul Fenton, Professor of Hebrew and Oriental Studies at the Paris-Sorbonne University, France will explore the little-known subject of Jewish converts to Islam who secretly practised their faith in Morocco.
