Jews of Calcutta
Lecture by Mavis Hyman.
Ever since David Shalom Cohen, an indigo trader, was invited to
ride with the Raja on his elephant, Iraqi-Jewish families such
as Elias or Ezra became prominent in Calcutta. They built hospitals
and schools and organized women’s leagues. The colourful
story of the Jews of Calcutta will also reveal the tolerant nature
of the host community.
Proceeds to a charity in the name of Miriam Hyman.
