A history of Educating Jews in Muslim lands
- the magnificent work of the Alliance Israelite Universelle

Lecture by Sir Martin Gilbert

It is 150 years since a group of French Jews decided to equip their co-religionists in Muslim lands with the tools – namely education - to survive in the modern world. The AIU’s network of schools spawned a thriving Jewish middle class across the Middle East and North Africa. The Alliance (also known as Kol Yisrael Haverim) continues its work to this day in Morocco, France and Israel.

Following a lecture by the distinguished historian Sir Martin Gilbert, the author of 80 books (most recently In Ishmael’s House: a history of Jews in Muslim lands), the audience is invited to ask questions and share reminiscences. There will be light refreshments served.
